Sacred SexualitySacred Sexuality is what makes these encounters tantric. The Tantrika regards emotions and relationship issues as gateways to self-realization, and their partner as an opportunity to be in the presence of the divine.
Rather than regarding the body as a hierarchy with the head closest to God and the feet farthest away from God, the Tantrika considers their entire body to be a temple.
The body is seen from an energetic standpoint with energy centers known as chakras. In Tantra, the sex center is seen as a powerful source of energy to fuel the engine of spiritual evolution. By generating and transmuting sexual energy, various other chakras my be activated, bringing about spiritual development. As we grow, we encounter painful experiences which may cause us to shut down our ability to feel subtle energies. So to recover our ability to open to the entirety of human experience, we must take the time to re-awaken those areas that have become de-sensitized.
One tradition activates the the sex center (Svadistana) and the brow center (Ajna) to awaken creativity as the first step to becoming fully aware. As the initiate practices, anything inconsistent with their bliss comes up to be handled. Witness consciousness is an essential tool in this process, allowing the initiate to observe and discharge the bound emotions thus restoring sensitivity to those areas of the body.
At the next level the root (Muladara) and the power center (Manipura) are activated and the initiate encounters the next level of blockages having to do with power and survival. Often this brings up infantile emotions and may take a longer time and deeper commitment to clear. Doing so allows the initiate to bring themselves into balance (Ida & Pingala), thus clearing the way for activating Divine Fire (Kundalini) along the central channel (Sushumna).
These energies can be further developed to manifest beyond the level of the body and into the greater energy field, thus healing on many levels of existence, from individual to community, to planetary and even universal.
